PhD Seminar
The EASM PhD Student Seminar is a two-day international event bringing together doctoral students in sport management from around the globe. This seminar will take place on 1-2 September, 2025, in Budapest, preceding the EASM Conference 2025.
The seminar provides a unique opportunity for PhD students to present their research, engage in discussions, and receive feedback from senior scholars. Additionally, it fosters international networking, encouraging collaborations and the establishment of professional and social relationships that may lead to future joint research projects across nations.
Application
Application Period: January 25 to April 30, 2025 (23:59 CET).
First time attendees will be given priority. To foster fruitful discussion and collaboration among the participants, a maximum of 20 PhD students will be admitted to the seminar.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
1. A brief overview of their PhD project (max. 400 words, excluding references) covering:
– Problem statement
– Research field
– Theoretical and methodological considerations
2. Project details:
– Supervisor(s) name(s),
– Institutional affiliation
– Project status (e.g., beginning, midway, or nearing completion).
The PhD project must have a sport management perspective.
Applications should be submitted via e-mail to Chris Horbel (chrish@nih.no). If unsure whether your project aligns with sport management, applicants are encouraged to reach out to discuss before submitting.
Applicants will receive a notification of acceptance by email by 23 May, 2025. Further submissions will be possible until 30 June, 2025, should there be spots available. These will be processed on a first come-first served basis.
Registration
Accepted candidates must register for both the PhD seminar and the EASM Conference via the official event booking system (https://www.conftool.com/easm2025)
The deadline for registration is 30 June, 2025. Late registrations will not be accepted, and spots will be offered to waitlisted candidates.
The registraton fee for the EASM PhD Student Seminar is €650.
The fee includes admission to the seminar, the full EASM Conference 2025, and associated activities.
Short Paper Submission
Paper presentations are an important element of the EASM PhD Student Seminar. The purpose is to give young scholars the opportunity to present their work and receive comprehensive feedback from senior scholars and fellow students. We do not expect fully finished papers. On the contrary, we encourage submitting ‘early-work-in-progress’ because this provides a good point of departure for subsequent revision and improvement before submitting the manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal or integrating it in the PhD thesis.
To participate in the EASM PhD Student Seminar, accepted candidates are required to submit a short paper (2,000–3,000 words, excluding references).
Papers can be:
- A draft of a journal article
- A detailed research project description
- A state-of-the-art literature review
- A methodology chapter for the dissertation
- Other foci for the papers can be agreed upon with the seminar chair.
- A consistent reference style must be applied.
Deadline for Short Paper Submission is 15 August, 2025.
The short paper must be submitted via email to Chris Horbel (chrish@nih.no). Within a week after submission deadline, papers will be circulated and roles as discussants assigned.
Paper Presentation and Discussion
Each participant will get 30 minutes for the presentation and discussion of the paper. Participants should briefly introduce their papers/projects in a presentation of max. 10 minutes. This should include highlighting key questions to fellow seminar participants or focusing on a specific topic for subsequent discussion.
Prior to the seminar, all papers will be circulated among the participants and each participant will be assigned one paper in the role as main discussant. After the presentation by the author, the assigned discussant will provide comments and feedback and chair the subsequent round of questions and comments by other participants and the senior scholars.
We put great emphasis on a comfortable atmosphere to provide fruitful and constructive feedback to each presenter, which will hopefully support progress on everyone’s project. So please bear in mind that most participants are non-native English speakers. Over the years, the EASM PhD Student Seminar has built-up a great number of successful ‘alumni’. Also, fine international networks have been established.
Thank you for sharing your work with us!
