The opening ceremony of the EASM2025 conference to be hosted by the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS), Budapest kicked-off with a vibrant ceremony at the university’s Gathering Hall. The event was not only attended by conference participants but distinguished guests and EASM board members as well.

The ceremony began with greetings from Professor Tamás Sterbenz, Rector of the Hungarian University of Sports Science (HUSS). Mr. Sterbenz highlighted Hungary’s and the university’s contribution to the development of sports management, as part of which he emphasized the close ties between the university and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Rector also mentioned two world renowned former HUSS graduates: István Balyi, who was originally designed the Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) Model and the world famous long-distance runner coach Mihály Iglói, whose athletes chieved 49 world records and 35 European records.

A speech was also given by Dr Balázs Baji, Director General of the Sports Institute, who underlined the fact that Hungary has organised a number of outstanding international sport events in the past 15 years, as a result of which not only successful athletes but excellent sport experts and sports scientist have visited Hungary. He also added that country prides itself on being a sports nation. He also welcomed that fact the conference’s main focus is sustainability, which has to be taken as an important factor when organising sports events.

Professor Vassil Girginov, President of the European Association for Sport Management (EASM) also delivered his welcome speech, in which he reminded those present that since its foundation in 1925, HUSS has become an established institution for research, training coaches and experts in sports sciences.

Participants were given some practical information by Operations Director Erika Kendelényi-Gulyás, who reminded everyone of the main theme of the conference is sustainability, drawing the listeners’ attention to how it will be embodied in different programmes during the event.

The evening programme continued with a lively performance by the university’s cheerleading team. Athletes Tekla Babály and Karina Sánta impressed the audience in the senior freestyle pom double category, while the senior freestyle pom team showcased their award-winning routine.

The performance was followed by dinner and networking session, creating an excellent opportunity to connect, share experiences, and celebrate the start of the conference week. The atmosphere reflected both the academic spirit and the cultural vibrancy that define EASM gatherings.

The conference with nearly 500 participants includes more than 60 sessions and 15 different thematic fields, and it will last from September 2nd to 5th, with the first scientific day being held on September 3rd.
